Doncaster Rovers (A-side) Take 2

With all the confusion about playing the Doncaster Rovers ‘A’ Kangaroo side last week, I endeavoured to organise a rematch. The Doncaster manager and coach were very apologetic in fielding a side that was not their best the previous week. There reason was that our match was a friendly while the match with our other side (Kangaroo) was an official game. Anyway, the boys were keen to see how they came up against this side.

We had several boys missing due either to illness or other activities and thus only had one on the bench. It was bound to be a long game for some. We got off to a great start and Brad and Andrew were unlucky not to have goals in the first 5 minutes. Doncaster made a strong break at the 10 minute mark and scored a very deserving goal from outside the box with a strike that sailed over Billy’s head. He had no chance. We didn’t let that worry us and within 3 minutes, Darcy had sneakingly pushed the ball into the net from an Alex corner. A tap by Andrew and a powerful strike by Alex put us up 2-1 with 5 minutes to go in the half. One more goal from Doncaster cemented the end of the first half and we could tell we had the opposition rattled. And why not. This team has only lost 3 times in the last 3 years, and here they were at 2-2 against an inexperienced Joey side. The second half was extremely physical affair from both sides. We were not accustomed to this level of attention and a lapse of concentration in our defence brought through a Doncaster goal. We had a few late chances but went away with a courageous 3-2 loss. The boys were gallant in defeat and it felt proud after the game when the manager, coach and several Doncaster parents praised the efforts of our boys. They were amazed with our skill, determination and game play and considered us worthy of not only being part of the Kangaroo league, but being extremely competitive. Kind words that gave the boys great encouragement.

Doncaster Rovers Result

What was supposed to be a hard fought tussle with the Doncaster Rovers Kangaroo A-side turned out to be a one-sided affair. For reasons unbeknown, the team we played consisted of boys from both the Doncaster Kangaroo A and B sides. I suppose you could call it their B+ side. Anyway, we played with great determination and by half time we were 4-0 up after great goals from Alex and Andrew. Sam, James and Lachlan were solid in defence, and our forward line kept penetrating the Doncaster defence. In fact, Doncaster was only able to get it passed the halfway on two occasions in the second half. A late goal by John when he drew the defence and veered the ball toward the edge of the goal was his first for the season. He as well as the rest of the team was duly delighted. We went away with a 6-0 win. The boys were ecstatic and revelled in the emotion that they won convincingly over a strong Kangaroo side.

Round 12 Doncaster Rovers (A-side)

A bye had been allocated for this Saturday. However, I managed to organise a game with the U/10 Doncaster Rovers Kangaroo side (Red Team). I was informed by their coach that this is their best U/10 side. So it should be a very hard fought out contest. I suspect the hardest game we will have played this year. The more intense training session that Ric had the boys do last Tuesday night will hopefully keep them in good stead for the weekend match. But whatever the outcome, the boys should be proud to be deserving opponents to a very strong Kangaroo side. So go out there on Saturday full of confidence and put into practice the ideas that Ric has instilled in you over the last few months. And remember that you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. That gain need not only be on the scoreboard, but the invaluable experience that you will acquire by playing a talented team.

With the school holidays still upon us, and the cold weather imposing illness on some, we were short several players. In fact we could only manage to muster a group of 10. With one man short it was going to be a difficult proposition. The boys showed great teamwork in the first 10 minutes and were unfortunate to not be a few goals up. Ashburton's defence was strong but with Alex's ball skills combined with Andrew's determination, it was only a matter or time when the net would be conquered. First it was Andrew's honour, followed by Alex. And poor Sebastian. He had two great attempts, each one narrowly missing their mark. At half time we were leading 3-0 and playing with only 10 men.

We continued to dominate the centre during the second half and if it wasn't for the speed of Lucas in running down attackers and the cool and collected patience of Winchester, Ashburton could have easily converted. John should also be commended on demonstrating some very skilful ball manoeuvres even in the sickened state he was in. We managed to collect a further 2 goals and went away proud that we could still be very competitive even with a player short and no-one on the bench. Well done!

Round 7 Croydon

The school holidays were now upon us and Lachlan, Kane and Jackson were absent, leaving only 1 on the bench. The match started with great determination and skill on both sides and it was obvious from the outset that this Croydon outfit was a well organised unit. We continued to push hard towards our goal and missed a few chances. However, finally Darcy managed to pass one through the net to the teams delight. At half time we were leading 2-0. The second half saw Box Hill quite sluggish and without any real sense of teamwork. Billy was taken out of goal to get a run and replaced by Andrew. Straight away he was in the action and almost immediately Andrew was diving to save a goal. Eventually Croydon managed to convert, to Andrew's disgust. At full time we had won 3-1. Croydon should be commended and had shown themselves to be a strong team, by far the strongest team we had played this year.

With a weeks break from training it was apparent that the boys were not at their best. In fact in his post match talk, Ric highlighted the fact that James was the only player who should be commended for holding his position. The others simply did not. Suppose this shows the importance of training and the boys went away determined to put things right next time.

Round 5 Doncaster Rovers

On arriving at Doncaster’s home ground we were confronted with a somewhat muddy strip. But this didn’t perturb the boys. In fact I think they were looking forward to the possibility of getting a bit dirty. With 3 key players away overseas or with injuries, it was going to be a physical game for the other 12 boys.

Within 2 minutes, Andrew had converted our first goal with a determined run to the goal line. Lucas and Kane worked especially well together on the left flanks while John and Winchester showed a great understanding of each others needs on the right side of the ground. But the highlight of the first half was the powerful kicking of Tarran. A miraculous goal from almost the halfway mark sailed over the goalkeepers arms and heralded the start of a Box Hill onslaught. We managed to be 6-0 up at halftime.

Doncaster proved a much better outfit during the second half and was determined to put up a strong defensive line. Sebastian and Billy were amongst the thick of the action and were unlucky not to get goals. Tarran once again put boot to ball and converted a goal from close the halfway line. With another 3 goals in the second half and a Doncaster converted direct penalty at the dying minutes, we were proud to go away with a 9-1 win.

Round 4 Glen Eira

Refreshed after a weeks break, the boys were overly enthusiastic to take to the field. With two teammates away (Sebastian and Bradley) it was shaping up to be a busy day for the 13 remaining boys. The boys got away to a great start with a goal by Darcy within the first minute, only to be disallowed by the off-side rule. But the boys were unfazed. For the next 25 minutes, they worked the ball well, especially to the flanks where the likes of Kane and Jackson were on fire. Particular mention must be made regarding our impervious defence line. James, Lachlan and Winchester exhibited such a considerable force in defence that the opposition were unable to enter our half little alone have a shot at goal. A miraculous goal by Alex in which he bent the ball from the corner post passed three opponents and the goalkeeper’s reach was remarkable. At the break we were up 4-0.

During the second half our confidence grew and so did Andrew’s enthusiasm for the ball. Unfortunately this resulted in a number of off-sides on his part but he was happy to walk away with four goals. Darcy too demonstrated his speed and skill and managed to put two balls into the net. We went away with a 9-0 win that could have easily exceeded 20 if not for the skills of the Glen Eira goalkeeper. He must be commended.

Round 3 Glen Waverley

Coming off from a good win the previous week, the boys were eager to continue their winning streak. From the outset, the boys cemented their authority on the game. Within a few minutes we were 2-0 up after goals converted by both Alex and Andrew. John was unlucky to miss a goal when his powerful strike of the ball hit the goal post. Sam too was unlucky not to gather a first half goal.

During the second half, Billy replaced his goalkeeper gloves for an on-field run and was sweetly rewarded with a goal. Sebastian too showed great strength and control to pass one into the net. The second half was all Box Hill. Our pace, skill and determination tired the opposition and we managed to convert a further 5 goals in the second half. At the sound of the whistle we had managed 11 goals with Glen Waverley unable to register on the scoreboard.

A Visitor Drops In

Last Saturday we were privileged to have a visit from a former Box Hill Inter player who has now signed a two-year contract with Derby County. James Meredith (Lucas's brother) watched our game against GlenWaverley with family and was impressed with our level of skill and speed. He provided us with a post-match chat and gave us a glimpse of what the game is like in football-mad England . As you can appreciate, the boys were fascinated in meeting an up and coming soccer star. Thanks again James for taking time out to talk to the boys and may the remainder of your time at Derby County be a memorable one.

Round 2 Ringwood City

Our second game of the season commenced early on a picture-perfect sunny autumn day. The contest for the ball was evenly fought in the first 10 minutes, but as our confidence grew so did our pressure on their goal line. Kane and Sam showed great skill in both evading the classy opposition and each converting a goal. Winchester showed remarkable thought and insight in his delivery of the ball to fellow team-mates and demonstrates why he has been aptly named by Ric as the "Professor". It was fitting that Alex traversed the field in his red coloured boots with great speed and agility. Likewise, Lucas may not have been wearing red, but his feet were surely hot with the speed he was able to generate to get back and defend the goal. A 3-0 lead at halftime provided the boys with an abundance of confidence.

The boys confidence grew in the second half and we had many opportunities to convert. However, Ringwood City must be commended for the determined defence of their goal. At the end Box Hill went away with a 4-1 win.

It is visibly evident that the boys are thoroughly enjoying the experience of being in a TEAM environment. They are bonding well and truly care more about the team dynamics rather than their self promotion. I great attribute to carry on into their future endeavours.

Round 1 Boronia

Our first game of the season was very eventful. Our boys showed great courage and skill, but most importantly they demonstrated a growing maturity in working as a TEAM. With Tarran almost scoring a miraculous goal from a quarter line chip that sailed over the crossbar to John having his strike saved on the goal line, both teams were scoreless at half-time. It was a well contested half with possession evenly divided between both teams. Boronia too, had their fair share of opportunities, but with the likes of James and Jackson defending, their mission was always thwarted.

Box Hill showed greater enthusiasm for getting the ball in the second half and were twice rewarded with goals by Bradley and Sam. Billy once again demonstrated great courage and hand skills in guarding the Box Hill goal line.

A 2-0 win was a great way to commence the season.
